From Legacy to Leadership
Origins in Reinsurance
The Mathrawala Family entered the reinsurance industry in 1956. Mr. H.L. Mathrawala (HLM), the founder, began his journey in insurance and reinsurance while editing and publishing books authored by Mr. Jaroslav Tuma, a respected reinsurance expert and former Swiss Re manager.
International Underwriting
From the bustling markets of Mumbai to the boardrooms of Europe, Mr. Mathrawala became a trusted underwriter for four international giants—Russia’s Ingosstrakh, Czech Republic’s Ceska Pojistovna, Poland’s Warta, and Mexico’s Patria Re—long before globalization became a buzzword. His work as a Managing General Agent (MGA) was not just transactional; it was transformational.
Nationalization Era
Then came 1972, when the Indian insurance industry was nationalized. While others paused, Mr. Mathrawala pivoted. He founded Mathrawala & Sons Reinsurance Brokers, a firm that carried the torch of private expertise through decades of public monopoly. His legacy became a bridge between tradition and innovation.
Formation of Mathrawala & Sons Group
In 1973, Mr. HLM founded Mathrawala & Sons Reinsurance Brokers, serving both Indian and international markets. His legacy became a bridge between tradition and innovation. Mathrawala & Sons went on to become one of the leading Reinsurance brokers in the Indian market. Mauritius Expansion
In 2013, the group expanded globally by establishing Math Re-Insurance Brokers Ltd. in Mauritius (October 17th), a strategic hub for international business.
Evolution into Mathsons Group
Mathrawala & Sons Insurance Brokers Pvt. Ltd. officially changed its name to Mathsons Re-insurance Brokers Pvt. Ltd. As the company evolved from a multi-generational family business to a growing corporate entity, the management team strongly felt that the company name should reflect this evolution. In 2023, Mathsons celebrated it’s 50th year anniversary.
Regional Expansion
In August 2024 and 2025 respectively, representative offices were launched in Tel Aviv, Israel and Dubai, UAE, marking further global outreach.

We were established in the year 1973 as a partnership firm by our late founder Mr. H.L. Mathrawala. He started his association with Insurance & Re-Insurance in 1958, while editing and publishing books on Reinsurance written by Mr. Jaroslav Tuma (Ex. Swiss Re Manager).
He was associated with various insurance related activities like reinsurance, binding authorities of foreign insurance companies in India, insurance survey, loss prevention, claims investigations and supervision. He was one of the pioneers in developing the Reinsurance Market in India.
